Jaishankar Holds Bilateral Talks with Mexico, Cyprus, Pacific Nations at UNGA

India reaffirms global partnerships through discussions on cooperation and shared roadmaps.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar conducted a series of bilateral meetings with counterparts from Mexico, Cyprus, and several Pacific Island nations on the margins of the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) session, underscoring India's proactive diplomacy in fostering stronger global ties. These engagements, held Wednesday, reflect New Delhi's strategic focus on expanding partnerships amid evolving international challenges, including geopolitical tensions and climate vulnerabilities.

In his discussion with Mexico's Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Juan Ramón de la Fuente, Jaishankar emphasised building on recent exchanges to craft a "fresh roadmap" for enhanced cooperation. The talks highlighted opportunities in trade, technology, and cultural exchanges between the two nations, which share a growing economic relationship valued at over $15 billion annually. Mexico, a key Latin American partner for India, aligns with New Delhi's outreach to the Global South, promoting mutual interests in renewable energy and digital innovation.

Jaishankar's meeting with Cypriot Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos reviewed bilateral progress since Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Cyprus earlier in 2025, which had elevated ties through defence and investment pacts. The ministers exchanged views on European developments, with Jaishankar reaffirming India's support for a UN-mediated resolution to the Cyprus dispute in line with UN Security Council resolutions. He extended an invitation for Kombos to visit India, signalling continued momentum in this Mediterranean-Indian Ocean corridor partnership.

During the Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation (FIPIC) Foreign Ministers' Meeting, Jaishankar held productive sessions with Pacific leaders, including Marshall Islands Foreign Minister Kalani Kaneko, Tuvalu Foreign Minister Paulson Panapa, and Palau Minister of State Gustav Aitaro.

These discussions reaffirmed India's commitment to the region, focusing on climate resilience, sustainable development, and capacity building—priorities under FIPIC, launched in 2014 to counterbalance influences in the Indo-Pacific. Jaishankar also conversed with Solomon Islands Foreign Minister Peter Shanel Agovaka and Tongan Prime Minister Dr Aisake Valu Eke, addressing shared concerns like rising sea levels threatening small island states.

These interactions at UNGA, a pivotal forum for multilateral dialogue, position India as a bridge-builder in diverse geographies. As the session progresses, Jaishankar's engagements pave the way for concrete outcomes, from joint initiatives in green technology to deepened security dialogues, advancing India's vision of a multipolar world order.
