Jailed Venezuela Leader Maduro Backs Dialogue Efforts, Signals Openness To Future Talks

Imprisoned former Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro has expressed support for “any path to dialogue” aimed at promoting peace and reconciliation in Venezuela, ahead of a US-backed meeting between representatives of the country’s interim government and opposition leaders. Maduro’s statement came while he remains in US custody awaiting trial on charges related to drug and firearms trafficking. Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, were captured during a US military raid in January and are currently being held at a detention centre in New York. Both have denied the allegations against them and have pleaded not guilty in the case.

The former Venezuelan leader has continued to communicate through his legal team while awaiting further proceedings in the US federal court system. A message attributed to Maduro was posted on his official Telegram account on Sunday, in which he welcomed efforts focused on dialogue and national reconciliation. “We welcome any path to dialogue that helps consolidate peace, coexistence, and reconciliation among Venezuelans,” the message said. In the statement, Maduro also spoke about the idea of a “national renaissance” and said such a process would require respect for political differences and inclusion of all sections of Venezuelan society.

His comments appeared to signal support for negotiations aimed at addressing Venezuela’s long-running political crisis. It was not immediately clear how the message was posted from Maduro’s detention facility. However, officials said the former leader remains in regular communication with his lawyers as he prepares for his trial. His son, Nicolas Maduro Guerra, who is a lawmaker in Venezuela, later shared the statement on social media platform X. The comments came ahead of a planned meeting involving representatives of Venezuela’s interim government and opposition figures.

The talks are being supported by the United States and are expected to focus on possible political engagement and efforts to address divisions that have deepened over years of instability.
