Italian Authorities Seize $290 Million Cocaine Hidden in Banana Cargo

Italian authorities have seized approximately 1,700 pounds (around 770 kilograms) of high-purity cocaine concealed inside a refrigerated shipment of bananas at the Port of Vado Ligure in northern Italy. The shipment had arrived from one of Ecuador's principal ports, and officials estimate the seized narcotics would have been worth nearly 250 million euros (approximately $290 million) if they had reached the illegal market. The operation is being described as one of the largest drug seizures at the port in recent years.

According to Italian authorities, the cocaine was hidden inside a refrigerated shipping container carrying bananas and was divided into 650 individual packages. Officers from Italy's Guardia di Finanza conducted inspections after identifying the shipment as suspicious during routine cargo monitoring. Field tests later confirmed that the seized substance was high-purity cocaine, indicating it was intended for large-scale distribution across European markets.

Investigators said the seizure followed an extensive analysis of commercial shipping routes connecting South America with the Port of Vado Ligure, an important gateway for imported goods entering Europe. Authorities noted that international drug trafficking organisations frequently exploit legitimate cargo shipments, particularly agricultural imports such as fruit, to conceal illegal narcotics and evade customs inspections.

The Guardia di Finanza stated that the operation forms part of its ongoing campaign to dismantle international drug trafficking networks operating across Europe. Officials emphasised that intelligence-led investigations, combined with cargo profiling and enhanced inspection procedures, continue to play a crucial role in intercepting illicit shipments before they reach criminal organisations. The agency also reiterated its commitment to protecting communities from the harmful effects of organised drug trafficking.

The seizure highlights the continuing challenge faced by customs and law enforcement agencies in monitoring global trade routes used by organised crime groups. Ecuador has become one of the major transit points for cocaine shipments originating in South America, with traffickers often concealing drugs inside legitimate export consignments destined for European ports. Italian authorities have significantly increased surveillance of high-risk cargo in response to evolving smuggling methods.

The discovery in Italy comes only weeks after United States Customs and Border Protection officers intercepted more than 1,100 pounds of cocaine hidden inside a commercial truck transporting cabbage at the Pharr Port of Entry in Texas. That seizure, valued at nearly $10.8 million, was uncovered using advanced imaging technology and a trained detection dog. Officials say such operations demonstrate the growing international cooperation and intelligence-sharing efforts aimed at disrupting global narcotics trafficking networks.
