Israel’s Mission to Recover Ron Arad’s Remains in Lebanon Fails, 41 Killed 40 Injured in the Operation
Israel's search for missing navigator Ron Arad fails after a deadly Lebanon operation.
An Israeli special forces operation aimed at locating the remains of missing Israeli airman Ron Arad has reportedly left at least 41 people dead and around 40 others injured in eastern Lebanon. The overnight operation, which involved air strikes and ground clashes, ultimately failed to uncover any trace of Arad, who has been missing since 1986. Israeli officials said the mission targeted areas believed to hold information about the fate of the captured navigator.
The operation took place in the town of Nabi Sheet in Lebanon’s Bekaa Valley, where extensive damage was reported following the assault. Witnesses described gutted buildings, torn-off rooftops, and scattered munitions surrounding a large crater at the site of the attack. Residents said the explosions were intense and sustained. Mohammed Mussa, a 55-year-old resident, told reporters that the blasts sounded “like something out of a movie", reflecting the scale of the overnight bombardment.
The media tour of the affected area was organised by Hezbollah, the Iran-backed militant group that wields significant influence in the region. Hezbollah officials said Israeli air strikes were followed by clashes on the ground, leading to heavy casualties and widespread destruction. The group has long been linked by Israel to intelligence about Arad, although his fate has remained one of the country’s most enduring military mysteries.

Arad, an Israeli navigator, disappeared after his aircraft went down during a mission over Lebanon in 1986, a period marked by the Lebanon War and the presence of Israeli forces in the region. Over the decades, Israel has conducted several intelligence and military efforts to determine what happened to him, but no definitive evidence about his fate has been recovered, keeping the case unresolved for nearly four decades.
