Israeli Police Arrest Man After Indian Worker Found Dead in Jerusalem

An Indian migrant worker was found dead inside an apartment in Jerusalem's Katamon neighbourhood, prompting Israeli police to launch a homicide investigation. According to local media reports, the 40-year-old man was discovered lying on the floor of the residence surrounded by blood. Authorities have not yet disclosed the victim's identity, and the exact cause of death remains under investigation pending further forensic examination.

Police officers responded to the scene after receiving information about the incident. Yuval Reuven, chief of the Moriah police station, said the victim was found "stretched out in a house with a lot of blood surrounding him." Investigators have stated that the circumstances of the death are still being examined, and forensic teams are working to determine the sequence of events that led to the incident.

According to Israeli media reports, investigators believe the case may have a criminal background. Police have arrested a 31-year-old man from the southern city of Eilat on suspicion of involvement in the alleged murder. The suspect has been taken into custody and transferred for interrogation as authorities continue gathering evidence. Officials have not released additional details regarding the relationship between the suspect and the victim or the possible motive behind the incident.

Israeli authorities have not yet released the identity of the deceased, and no official statement has been issued regarding the cause of death. India has a significant migrant workforce in Israel, particularly in the construction and caregiving sectors. According to India's Ministry of External Affairs, around 32,000 Indian workers were living in Israel as of October 2024. Approximately 12,000 of them arrived after October 2023, including more than 6,300 workers who travelled under the bilateral labour mobility agreement signed between India and Israel in November 2023.

The two countries have continued expanding labour cooperation in recent years. Earlier this year, India and Israel agreed to facilitate the arrival of up to 50,000 additional Indian workers over the next five years. Both governments have acknowledged the contribution of Indian workers to Israel's economy while emphasising the importance of ensuring their welfare and safety. The latest incident is expected to receive close attention from both Israeli investigators and Indian diplomatic authorities as the investigation continues.
