Israeli Forces Encounter Civilian Resistance During Advance Into Syrian Town Amid Clashes
Residents resist Israeli troops entering Syrian town
Residents of the southern Syrian town of Abdin have reportedly resisted an incursion by Israeli troops, blocking roads and throwing stones as military vehicles entered the area near a United Nations-patrolled buffer zone, according to eyewitness accounts. The confrontation occurred on Sunday when Israeli forces moved into Abdin, a town located close to a buffer zone that has been under Israeli control since December 2024, following the ouster of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in an insurgent offensive.
The area has remained highly volatile since the change in control, with periodic tensions between residents and military patrols. According to local accounts, residents attempted to block advancing Israeli military vehicles by placing rocks across roads, while some young men and boys threw stones in an effort to push back the patrol. In response, Israeli troops reportedly fired warning shots at walls and into the air near protesters before discharging artillery rounds toward the village.
No casualties were reported in the incident, but the exchange prompted widespread fear among residents. Following the confrontation, most residents fled the area, with many remaining displaced on Monday due to concerns over further military activity. Locals described the situation as increasingly tense, with fears that the recent clash could lead to intensified incursions or retaliatory operations in the coming days.

A resident identified as Mohammad al-Hassan said military patrols have become a frequent occurrence in the village, with Israeli forces reportedly entering Abdin every few days in armoured vehicles. He alleged that soldiers conduct searches of homes, knock on doors, and in some cases forcibly enter houses if residents do not respond, causing panic among families.
Residents also reported that such operations have created an atmosphere of fear, particularly among women and children, as troops move through residential areas. While independent verification of specific claims remains limited, the situation reflects ongoing instability in southern Syria’s border regions, where shifting control and military presence continue to fuel tensions between local populations and armed forces operating in the area.
