Israeli Ambassador Dismisses Trump-Netanyahu Tension as a ‘Lovers’ Spat’

Israeli envoy rejects rift claims amid Iran-Israel ceasefire tensions.

Tensions between Israel, Iran, and the United States drew renewed international attention after reports emerged suggesting disagreements between US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over recent military actions and ceasefire dynamics. While hostilities between Israel and Iran have reportedly paused following an exchange of strikes, diplomatic messaging from key officials highlighted both cooperation and underlying friction among allies.

Israeli Ambassador to the United States Yechiel Leiter downplayed claims of a sharp diplomatic ultimatum from President Trump to Prime Minister Netanyahu, instead describing the relationship between the two leaders as long-standing and cooperative. Speaking to Fox News, Leiter said occasional tensions between the two leaders should not be misinterpreted, likening them to “a lovers’ spat,” while emphasizing that their strategic partnership remains strong despite differences in tone or timing.

Reports in international media suggested that Israel halted further strikes on Iran after Trump allegedly warned Netanyahu that continued military escalation could risk US political backing. However, Leiter rejected the framing of a unilateral warning, insisting that decisions on reducing military activity were part of coordinated discussions. He added that Israel continues to maintain its right to self-defence in response to ballistic missile threats, underscoring ongoing security concerns in the region.

At the same time, President Trump has reportedly expressed frustration with the escalating cycle of attacks between Israel and Iran. He has publicly urged both sides to cease hostilities, while also indicating that diplomatic negotiations toward a broader peace framework remain fragile and dependent on political conditions. His remarks have reflected both urgency and uncertainty regarding the durability of any ceasefire arrangement.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in a televised statement, reaffirmed Israel’s position that it retains the right to defend itself against Iranian attacks. According to reports citing Israeli military sources, operations against Iranian targets continued until recently, including strikes on air defence infrastructure and energy-related facilities. Israeli officials indicated that military action could resume depending on developments on the ground.

Iranian officials, meanwhile, have maintained a defiant stance, warning that they are prepared for prolonged confrontation if hostilities continue. Statements attributed to Iranian military sources and lawmakers suggested that Tehran could expand its response to include regional US interests if necessary. Despite the reported pause in strikes, both sides continue to exchange warnings, highlighting the fragility of the current calm and the risk of renewed escalation in the Middle East.
