Israel Consul General Announces Shivaji Maharaj Statue Plan, Seeks Maharashtra Government Support

Israel plans a grand Shivaji Maharaj statue to strengthen India-Israel cultural bonds.

Israel has announced plans to install a grand statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in one of its major cities, a move aimed at strengthening cultural ties between India and Israel. The announcement was made by Israel's Consul General in Mumbai, Yaniv Revach, during celebrations marking Shiv Rajyabhishek Din. The proposed monument is being presented as a symbol of friendship and growing people-to-people connections between the two countries.

Speaking about the initiative, Revach said the project would serve as more than a commemorative structure and would help foster a deeper understanding between Indian and Israeli communities. He noted that Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj holds immense historical and cultural significance in India and expressed confidence that the monument would introduce Israelis to the Maratha ruler's legacy, leadership, and contributions.

According to Revach, Israel intends to construct a large statue of Shivaji Maharaj and install it in a prominent city within the country. He described the project as a long-term cultural undertaking designed to strengthen bilateral relations beyond political and economic cooperation. The diplomat said the initiative reflects the admiration many Israelis have for India's history and heritage.

To ensure the memorial accurately represents Shivaji Maharaj's legacy, Israeli officials have sought assistance from Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The cooperation is expected to include historical references, artistic guidance, and design inputs. Revach said the chief minister immediately agreed to support the effort, helping ensure that the final monument reflects historical authenticity and cultural significance.

In a letter addressed to Fadnavis, the Israeli diplomat stated that the statue would symbolize the close relationship between India and Israel. He also highlighted the historical connection between Maharashtra and the Jewish community, many of whose descendants now live in Israel and contribute to various sectors of Israeli society. The monument is expected to serve as a reminder of these longstanding cultural links.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis welcomed the announcement and pledged full support from the Maharashtra government. In a message shared on social media, he described the proposal as a historic initiative and thanked the Israeli Consulate for choosing to honor Shivaji Maharaj in Israel. The project is being viewed as another milestone in the steadily expanding partnership between India and Israel, which has increasingly extended into cultural and historical collaboration alongside strategic and economic ties.
