Israel Targets Hezbollah Bases In Lebanon As US-Iran Dialogue Faces Pressure
Israel strikes Hezbollah bases amid US-Iran talks tension.
Tensions in southern Lebanon escalated sharply after Israel carried out overnight air strikes targeting what it described as Hezbollah positions in the Nabatieh and Mayfadoun regions. The strikes, announced by the Israeli military on Monday, have added fresh pressure on an already fragile ceasefire environment and raised concerns about wider regional stability amid ongoing diplomatic efforts involving the United States and Iran.
The Israeli military said the strikes were directed at Hezbollah headquarters and infrastructure used for military operations in southern Lebanon. It also claimed to have destroyed a rocket launcher allegedly used to target Israeli forces operating in what it described as a security zone. According to the Israeli statement, the action was taken in response to what it called continued attacks by Hezbollah against its troops deployed near the border area.
Hezbollah, however, accused Israel of repeatedly violating the ceasefire agreement, alleging that multiple strikes were carried out across southern Lebanon, including on residential structures in Nabatieh and Mayfadoun. The group also reported drone activity and explosions in several nearby towns, stating that it was closely monitoring the situation and reserving the right to respond in defence of Lebanese territory and civilians. The conflicting accounts underscore the growing mistrust between both sides.

The latest escalation comes just days after Hezbollah Secretary-General Naim Qassem rejected a US-backed framework agreement between Lebanon and Israel, insisting that a full Israeli withdrawal from Lebanese territory remains a key condition for any lasting ceasefire arrangement. The renewed hostilities now risk undermining diplomatic momentum in the region, particularly as Washington and Tehran attempt to build on recent talks aimed at reducing broader Middle East tensions.
Analysts warn that the fighting in southern Lebanon could have wider geopolitical implications, potentially complicating the emerging US-Iran dialogue outlined in a recent memorandum of understanding. The agreement had aimed to reduce conflict across multiple regional fronts, including Lebanon, but ongoing exchanges of fire suggest that enforcement on the ground remains highly uncertain.
Meanwhile, regional voices continue to call for de-escalation. Speaking at a NATO summit in Istanbul, Turkish Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmus said that lasting peace in the Middle East would require an end to expansionist policies and justice for Palestinians after decades of conflict. As tensions persist, southern Lebanon remains on edge, with the risk of further escalation still looming large over the region.
