Israel Says Iran Fired Nearly 30 Missiles Since Sunday Amid Renewed Tensions

Israeli military reports nearly 30 Iranian missile launches since Sunday.

Iran fired nearly 30 ballistic missiles towards Israel since Sunday night, an Israeli military official said on Monday, marking the first direct exchange of fire between the two countries since a ceasefire was announced in April. The renewed hostilities have heightened concerns about a broader escalation in an already volatile Middle East region.

According to the Israeli official, the missiles were launched by Iran over the course of several attacks, while Yemen's Houthi rebels separately fired two missiles towards Israel. Air raid sirens sounded across large parts of northern and central Israel, and explosions were heard over Jerusalem, prompting residents to seek shelter as air defence systems were activated.

In response, the Israeli military said it carried out strikes on multiple targets at a petrochemical complex in Mahshahr, located in southwestern Iran. Israeli officials alleged that the facility produces chemical materials used in the manufacture of ballistic missiles. The military said the operation was intended to disrupt Iran's ability to produce weapons used in attacks against Israel.

The Israeli military also reported strikes against Iranian air defence systems as part of its retaliatory operations. Officials said the attacks were designed to weaken Iran's military capabilities and reduce threats posed by future missile launches. Tehran has not immediately commented on the claims regarding damage to the Mahshahr facility.

Military cooperation between Israel and the United States also appeared to intensify amid the latest developments. An Israeli military official said Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir had spoken twice over the past day with the commander of the United States Central Command (CENTCOM). Military spokesperson Brigadier General Effie Defrin later confirmed that operational assessments were ongoing and that close communication with US counterparts was being maintained.

The latest exchange marks the first direct confrontation between Israel and Iran since a truce was announced on April 8. The renewed missile attacks and retaliatory strikes have raised fears of a wider regional conflict, with international observers closely monitoring developments and urging restraint to prevent further escalation.
