Israel Parliament Passes Budget, Helping Netanyahu Avoid Snap Elections

Budget passage helps Netanyahu avoid early elections in Israel

Israel’s parliament, the Knesset, has passed the national budget in a decisive vote, enabling Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to avoid early elections and stabilise his coalition government. The late-night approval marks a crucial political victory for Netanyahu, whose administration had faced the risk of collapse if the budget failed to pass before the legal deadline.

Under Israeli law, failure to approve a budget by the end of March would have automatically dissolved the Knesset and triggered elections within months. The successful passage of the budget therefore removes the immediate threat of a snap poll and allows Netanyahu’s government to continue in office, potentially until the scheduled elections later in 2026.

The approved budget—reported to be the largest in Israel’s history—places significant emphasis on defence spending amid ongoing regional conflict. Allocations have increased sharply to support military operations linked to tensions involving Iran and Hezbollah, reflecting the government’s prioritisation of security concerns during a volatile period.

However, the budget has also sparked political controversy. Opposition leaders criticised certain allocations, including funding directed toward ultra-Orthodox institutions, arguing that such provisions come at the expense of other public sectors. The debate highlighted deep divisions within Israeli politics over fiscal priorities, military spending, and social policy.

For Netanyahu, the vote represents more than a fiscal milestone—it is a strategic political reprieve. Opinion polls had suggested that an early election could have posed a significant challenge to his leadership. By securing parliamentary backing for the budget, he has gained breathing room to navigate both domestic political pressures and ongoing security challenges.

Despite the immediate stability, analysts note that political uncertainty remains. Public dissatisfaction over security issues and economic pressures continues to shape the political landscape, and Netanyahu still retains the option to call elections earlier than scheduled if circumstances change. For now, however, the budget’s passage ensures continuity in governance at a critical moment for the country.
