Israel Confirms Civilian Death Caused by its Own Artillery Fire

Israel army confirms accidental artillery death on northern border.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed on March 23, 2026, that an Israeli civilian killed the previous day near the northern border with Lebanon died as a result of friendly fire from its own artillery, rather than from a Hezbollah rocket attack as initially reported. The incident occurred in the kibbutz of Misgav Am, marking a tragic case of operational error amid heightened cross-border hostilities with the Iran-backed militant group.

The victim, identified as 60-year-old Ofer Moskovitz, an avocado farmer and kibbutz spokesman, was struck while in his vehicle on March 22. Initial reports from emergency responders and the IDF attributed the death to a rocket fired from Lebanon, with Hezbollah claiming responsibility for targeting Israeli soldiers in the area. No air raid sirens sounded at the time of the strike, which caused damage and set vehicles ablaze. The IDF launched an immediate investigation, stating that preliminary findings indicate the civilian was killed by artillery fire conducted to support IDF troops operating in southern Lebanon.

The military described the incident as involving "several severe issues and operational errors" in both planning and execution of the fire. A comprehensive probe is underway to determine the exact circumstances, including how the friendly fire occurred during active operations along the volatile frontier. This marks the first civilian fatality in northern Israel linked to the ongoing exchanges since the broader regional conflict intensified, though the cause has shifted from enemy action to internal mishap.

The confirmation comes as Israel continues ground operations and airstrikes in southern Lebanon against Hezbollah, which has maintained near-daily rocket barrages into northern communities in solidarity with Iran amid the wider US-Israel war with Tehran. The northern border has seen tens of thousands displaced due to the sustained fire, with previous incidents resulting in civilian and military casualties primarily from Lebanese-side attacks. The IDF emphasized that such errors are rare but underscored the complexities of operating in close proximity to populated areas during active conflict.

This friendly fire revelation has drawn attention to the risks faced by Israeli civilians in border regions, even as the military maintains high alert levels. Authorities have not announced immediate changes to operational protocols, but the investigation is expected to inform reviews of artillery coordination and safety measures. The incident highlights the human cost of the prolonged standoff, where miscalculations can compound the toll on communities already strained by months of insecurity.
