Iran's IRGC Claims It Shot Down US MQ-1 Predator Drone Over Territorial Waters

Iran's IRGC claims it destroyed a US MQ-1 Predator drone over its territorial waters.

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has claimed that it intercepted and shot down a United States MQ-1 Predator drone after it allegedly entered Iranian territorial airspace over the country's territorial waters early on Sunday. The claim was reported by Iranian state-affiliated media outlet Mehr News, which cited an official statement from the IRGC. As of publication, there has been no immediate confirmation or response from US authorities regarding the incident.

According to the IRGC, the drone was detected in the early hours of Sunday after it allegedly crossed into Iranian-controlled airspace. The military force described the aircraft as belonging to the "aggressor American military" and claimed that it was operating with hostile intent. Iranian officials said their air defense systems immediately tracked the drone and moved to neutralize the perceived threat.

The IRGC stated that advanced surface-to-air missile systems were used to target and destroy the unmanned aircraft before it could carry out what Tehran described as a planned hostile operation. Following the reported interception, the IRGC Air Defense Command issued a warning that Iranian airspace and territorial waters remain under strict surveillance and protection. Officials further warned that any future violations would be met with a decisive military response.

The latest claim comes amid heightened tensions between Iran and the United States. Just days earlier, on May 26, the IRGC announced that it had shot down a US MQ-9 Reaper drone after allegedly detecting hostile aerial activity near Iranian territory. Iranian media also reported that military forces had engaged an intruding aircraft and taken action against another unmanned platform during the same period.

According to reports cited by regional media outlets, Iranian authorities claimed last week that their forces shot down an RQ-4 surveillance drone and opened fire on an intruding F-35 fighter jet. These claims have not been independently verified. The repeated announcements have contributed to growing concerns over military activity and aerial encounters in the region, particularly amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.

The MQ-1 Predator is a medium-altitude, long-endurance unmanned aerial vehicle developed by General Atomics in the United States. First introduced in the 1990s, the drone became one of the most recognizable military UAVs due to its dual capability for surveillance and precision strikes. Equipped with advanced sensors and, in later versions, Hellfire missiles, the MQ-1 has been widely used by US forces in operations across Afghanistan, Iraq, and other conflict zones, remaining a significant symbol of modern drone warfare.
