Iran said the missile attack was carried out in retaliation for an earlier US military attack on Iranian vessels. Iran’s Revolutionary Guards announced the operation in a statement carried by the state-backed IRNA news agency. The Guards said they had “struck the American Al-Azraq base in Jordan with heavy missile strikes” and described the attack as part of a designated “punitive operation.” The statement framed the missile barrage as a response to US military action and indicated that the Jordanian facility was targeted because of its use by American forces. The escalation adds another layer to the wider confrontation between Washington and Tehran, with military installations in the region facing increased security risks.

Jordanian authorities said the country’s air-defence systems responded to the incoming missiles shortly after the attack began. The Jordanian military said its defence network detected 20 ballistic missiles headed toward the country and that 18 of them were successfully intercepted and neutralised. The remaining two missiles impacted unpopulated areas, according to an official army statement. The account indicated that Jordanian forces were able to prevent most of the incoming projectiles from reaching their intended targets, although the reported damage to US aircraft showed that the attack nevertheless had an impact on the American military presence at the base.
