Jordan, a staunch U.S. ally that hosts American forces across the Middle East, has paid a significant price for its close relationship with Washington, with its military bases becoming repeated targets of Iranian strikes amid the broader 2026 Iran war. Hundreds of drone and missile attacks have compounded other strains on the kingdom, including a slumping economy and escalating volatility in the neighboring West Bank, where Israeli settlers have intensified attacks on Palestinians in recent months.

King Abdullah II of Jordan appeared to acknowledge the necessity of such alliances in remarks to European lawmakers, warning that cascading instability, driven by the COVID-19 pandemic, Russia's invasion of Ukraine, and multiple Israeli military campaigns across the Middle East, could trigger chaos extending far beyond the region. "We are living through wave after wave of disruption, without pause," he said. "There is no telling where the boundaries of this battleground will end. That, my friends, is a threat to people everywhere."

Beyond the security threat posed by Iran, Jordan continues to grapple with a range of other pressing challenges. The Hashemite Kingdom, a puzzle-piece-shaped nation bordering Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Israel, and the West Bank, is home to more than 11 million people living between the Jordan River, the Red Sea, and eastern desert regions rich in ancient ruins. The country's economy has buckled under the weight of hosting millions of refugees fleeing regional conflicts, while soaring energy prices and persistent inflation have added further strain.

Jordan's tourism sector, long a vital economic pillar built around landscapes made famous in Hollywood films featuring actors such as Peter O'Toole, Harrison Ford, and Matt Damon, continues to struggle to attract visitors amid the region's ongoing instability. The convergence of security threats from Iranian strikes, economic pressure from the refugee crisis, and instability in the neighboring West Bank underscores the multifaceted challenges facing Jordan as it navigates its position as one of Washington's most consistent regional partners, even as that partnership continues to expose the kingdom to direct military risk within an increasingly volatile Middle East.
