Iran Says Major Parts Of US Deal Finalised, Cites Washington Position Shifts

Tehran says most US agreement text nearly complete but disputes Washington inconsistency slowing progress.

Iran has said that significant portions of a potential agreement with the United States have been completed, even as it cautions that ongoing differences in Washington’s positions continue to slow down progress in the negotiations. According to remarks reported by Iran’s Mehr News Agency, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei indicated that while much of the draft text has been finalized, key obstacles remain that prevent a final agreement.

Baghaei, speaking in an interview late Thursday, dismissed speculation that a deal was imminent but acknowledged that substantial work had been done on the document under discussion. He stated that “textually, the text has almost been finalized in its major parts,” while attributing delays to what he described as inconsistent positions taken by the United States during the talks.

He further said Iran had entered the diplomatic process with what he called “goodwill and full responsibility,” but accused US officials of repeatedly shifting their stance, introducing unrealistic demands, and at times taking actions that Tehran views as incompatible with ongoing negotiations. His comments reflected Iran’s position that external pressure would not influence its core policy decisions or negotiating red lines.

Baghaei also alleged that both the United States and Israel had violated a ceasefire declared in April, claiming that recent incidents included strikes on infrastructure in southern Iran. He specifically referred to reported damage to facilities in the coastal city of Sirik, including two water reservoirs, which he said were targeted during the period of supposed de-escalation. These claims have not been independently verified in the available reporting.

In addition, he addressed tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, a key global shipping route, blaming US military actions for increasing instability in the region. According to the report, he stated that Iran had acted to safeguard maritime security, while suggesting that external interventions had undermined stability. He also referenced claims that Iran’s military leadership had announced restrictions in the waterway following strikes on southern Iranian facilities and attacks on commercial vessels.

Despite reports suggesting that a signing ceremony could be approaching, Baghaei emphasized that no final decision had been taken. He said Iranian authorities would continue reviewing all aspects of the proposed agreement carefully and that any eventual deal would only be accepted if it aligned with national interests and was deemed beneficial to the Iranian people.
