Iran Refuses Negotiations Under Pressure, Trump Delays Ceasefire Decision

Iran rejects pressured talks as US delays ceasefire decision.

Diplomatic tensions between the United States and Iran have escalated again as both sides prepare for a possible new round of ceasefire negotiations in Islamabad, even as sharp differences remain over the conditions for dialogue and the status of the current truce. While reports suggest back-channel coordination through mediators, neither Washington nor Tehran has formally confirmed the exact schedule of talks.

According to the Associated Press, two officials familiar with the matter indicated that both countries have shown willingness to resume discussions in Pakistan’s capital. However, the situation remains uncertain, with Iranian state media stating that no official Iranian delegation had arrived in Islamabad “so far", directly contradicting earlier speculation about high-level participation already being underway.

At the centre of the diplomatic standoff is a fundamental disagreement over the conditions for negotiations. Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf has firmly stated that Tehran will not engage in talks conducted under pressure or intimidation, saying, “We do not accept negotiations under the shadow of threats.” His remarks underline Iran’s position that any diplomatic engagement must take place on equal terms without coercive influence.

On the other side, US President Donald Trump has signalled a more cautious approach, saying he is in “no rush” to renew the ceasefire agreement before its scheduled expiration on Wednesday. His statement reflects Washington’s attempt to maintain leverage while assessing whether renewed talks could produce a more durable arrangement amid ongoing regional instability.

Meanwhile, Pakistan has reportedly played a mediating role, with officials indicating that delegations led by US Vice President J.D. Vance and Iranian parliamentary figure Ghalibaf could arrive in Islamabad for discussions. However, with conflicting signals emerging from all sides, the future of the ceasefire and the proposed talks remains uncertain as diplomatic tensions continue to shape the Indo-Pacific and West Asian geopolitical landscape.
