Iran Ramps Up Air Defences While Trump Defies Congress Over Iran War
Iran activates air defences as Trump faces Iran war deadline.
Iran briefly activated its air defence systems late Thursday to counter suspected small aircraft and reconnaissance drones, as tensions escalated alongside a looming political deadline facing U.S. President Donald Trump over congressional authorisation for military action.
According to Iranian news agencies, the air defences were active for roughly 20 minutes in parts of the capital, targeting what officials described as “small aircraft and reconnaissance drones.” Authorities later confirmed that the situation had stabilised and returned to normal, with no immediate reports of damage or casualties.
The development comes at a sensitive moment in the ongoing U.S.-Iran conflict, as the White House signalled it would not be constrained by a key congressional deadline tied to the War Powers Resolution. The law requires the U.S. president to seek approval from Congress within 60 days of initiating military action or withdraw forces, setting up a potential institutional clash in Washington.

The Trump administration has argued that the deadline does not apply in the current context, citing a ceasefire that began in early April. Officials maintain that the truce effectively “terminated” active hostilities, even as critics in Congress dispute that interpretation and push for greater oversight.
Meanwhile, Iran’s leadership has struck a defiant tone, with senior figures asserting control over key regional dynamics, including shipping routes in the Strait of Hormuz. The broader conflict, which began with U.S.-Israeli strikes in February and subsequent Iranian retaliation, has already had significant geopolitical and economic consequences, including volatility in global oil markets.
The brief activation of air defences highlights the fragile nature of the ceasefire and the risk of rapid escalation despite the absence of sustained direct clashes in recent weeks. With political tensions rising in Washington and strategic posturing continuing in the region, uncertainty remains over whether the conflict will de-escalate or enter a new phase.
