Iran Media Confirms 15 Explosions at Kharg Island after US Strikes Hit Naval Base, Air Defence Facility

US strikes hit Kharg Island's naval base and air defence, with oil facilities reportedly undamaged.

Iranian media reported at least 15 explosions on Kharg Island following US strikes targeting military installations, including an air defence facility, a naval base, the airport control tower, and a helicopter hangar belonging to an offshore oil company. Thick smoke was seen rising over the island, but officials and local sources emphasized that no oil infrastructure was damaged, despite fears of disruption to the strategic energy hub. Kharg Island serves as a key logistical and oil-export centre for Tehran, making its security critical amid ongoing regional tensions.

According to Fars News Agency, the strikes were limited to military targets, aligning with statements by former US President Donald Trump, who had warned in a social media post that oil facilities could be targeted if Tehran continues to obstruct the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian authorities stressed that energy exports and operations remained unaffected, mitigating immediate concerns of a disruption to global oil markets. The agency also reported that emergency response teams were deployed to assess damage and contain fires at the targeted military sites.

Trump’s earlier statements had heightened anxieties, as Kharg Island hosts critical infrastructure for Iran’s offshore oil production. While the strikes avoided oil facilities, they underscored the potential risks to regional energy security and the volatility of US-Iran tensions. Observers noted that the US action appears intended as a calibrated military message rather than a full-scale attack on Iran’s energy capabilities.

Iranian officials condemned the strikes as violations of national sovereignty and warned of potential retaliation against US-linked assets in the region. Tehran has previously threatened to respond if key shipping lanes or infrastructure were to be targeted, reflecting the strategic importance of both the Strait of Hormuz and offshore oil installations. Analysts said the situation could escalate if either side acts on its threats.

The US-Iran confrontation comes amid a broader regional context of rising tensions, including military operations in the Middle East and disputes over energy exports. Kharg Island, located in the Persian Gulf, plays a central role in Iran’s oil export network, handling a substantial portion of crude shipments, which makes any military activity there particularly sensitive for global markets.

While the explosions caused localised damage to military sites, Iran’s authorities emphasized that civilian and energy infrastructure remain intact. Officials called for continued vigilance and warned that further provocations could prompt retaliatory measures, underlining the fragile security situation in the Persian Gulf amid ongoing geopolitical disputes.
