Iran Holds Ali Khamenei Funeral 132 Days After US-Israel Strikes Killed Supreme Leader

Former Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was laid to rest on Friday in his hometown of Mashhad, 132 days after he was killed in an airstrike, according to Iranian state television. The burial took place at the revered Imam Reza shrine amid heightened regional tensions, as renewed exchanges of attacks between the United States and Iran raised fears of a broader conflict in the Middle East.

Khamenei's flag-draped coffin was carried into the shrine in eastern Iran during a solemn ceremony attended by large crowds. Thousands of mourners gathered outside the complex to offer prayers as the coffin was taken into the memorial hall. State broadcaster IRIB reported that the "body of the martyred leader of the Islamic Revolution was buried in the memorial hall of the shrine of Imam Reza," marking the conclusion of months of official mourning and preparations for his final rites.

Notably absent from the public ceremony was Mojtaba Khamenei, Ali Khamenei's son and successor, whose nonappearance drew attention during the high-profile funeral. Iranian state media did not provide any explanation for his absence, and there was no official statement indicating whether he participated in the proceedings privately. The ceremony nevertheless proceeded with senior officials, religious figures and mourners paying their final respects to the late leader.

The burial came against the backdrop of escalating military tensions between Iran and the United States.
