Iran Hits Kuwait's Fully Loaded Oil Tanker Anchored at Dubai Port, Fire Breaks Out Onboard

An Iranian strike on Kuwait's Al Salmi tanker at Dubai port triggers fire and oil spill concerns.

A fully loaded Kuwaiti crude oil tanker was damaged in an Iranian strike while anchored near Dubai, raising concerns over maritime security and the risk of an environmental disaster in the region. The vessel, identified as Al Salmi, was carrying approximately 2 million barrels of oil sourced from Kuwait and Saudi Arabia at the time of the incident. Authorities confirmed that a fire broke out onboard following the attack but was later brought under control.

According to the Kuwait Petroleum Corporation, the tanker was struck during what it described as an Iranian attack while stationed at Dubai Port’s anchorage. The impact caused structural damage to the vessel’s hull and triggered a fire, prompting emergency response measures. Officials warned of the possibility of an oil spill, although initial containment efforts appeared to prevent immediate large-scale environmental damage.

The incident is part of a broader pattern of escalating hostilities in the Gulf region, particularly following recent military actions involving the United States and Israel against Iran. Since late February, multiple merchant vessels have reportedly been targeted using missiles and drone strikes in key maritime routes, including the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.

Authorities in the United Arab Emirates have not yet disclosed the full extent of the damage or provided detailed information on casualties, if any. However, the swift response by emergency teams helped extinguish the onboard fire, preventing further escalation of the situation. Maritime agencies are closely monitoring the area to assess any potential impact on shipping routes and environmental safety.

The attack has heightened concerns among global energy markets and shipping operators, as the Gulf region remains a critical corridor for international oil supply. Disruptions in this area can have far-reaching implications for global oil prices and supply chains. Industry experts have warned that repeated incidents could lead to increased insurance costs and operational risks for vessels operating in the region.

As investigations continue, international stakeholders are expected to call for enhanced security measures to protect commercial shipping in the Gulf. The incident underscores the fragile security environment amid ongoing geopolitical tensions, with the risk of further escalation posing challenges to both regional stability and global energy security.
