Iran Declares US Naval Blockade an Act of War; Threatens Military Retaliation

Iran warns the US Navy will face consequences over the Hormuz blockade.

Senior Iranian officials have issued a sharp warning to the United States amid escalating tensions over naval activity near the Strait of Hormuz, cautioning that the Gulf of Oman could become a “graveyard” for American warships if military pressure against Tehran intensifies further. The remarks come as diplomatic efforts between Washington and Iran remain stalled and fears of renewed confrontation in the region continue to grow.

Mohsen Rezaei, a member of Iran’s Expediency Discernment Council and adviser to Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, delivered the warning during comments broadcast on Iranian state television. Rezaei criticised what he described as a US naval blockade in the Hormuz region and warned that any attempt to intensify military pressure would be treated as an act of war by Tehran. He argued that Iran’s restraint so far should not be interpreted as weakness or acceptance of American actions.

The remarks came amid reports of heightened military posturing in the Gulf region and renewed rhetoric from US President Donald Trump, who has reportedly warned of military strikes “much harder than before” if tensions continue to escalate. Iranian officials have increasingly framed the American naval presence near strategic waterways as a direct threat to regional stability and national sovereignty, especially as negotiations over sanctions and nuclear issues remain deadlocked.

The Strait of Hormuz and the Gulf of Oman remain among the world’s most strategically significant maritime corridors, with a substantial portion of global oil and liquefied natural gas shipments passing through the region. Any escalation involving military vessels could have serious implications for global energy markets and international trade. Iran has repeatedly threatened to disrupt shipping routes in response to perceived aggression, while the United States has maintained that its naval deployments are intended to ensure maritime security and freedom of navigation.

Iranian officials also challenged the legal and political implications of any blockade targeting the country’s maritime access. Rezaei stated that Tehran considers naval restrictions equivalent to warfare and reserves the right to respond accordingly under international norms. The comments reflected a broader hardening of rhetoric within Iran’s political and military establishment as tensions continue to rise across West Asia following recent regional security incidents and renewed concerns over nuclear diplomacy.

The escalating exchange of warnings has added to uncertainty surrounding efforts to revive long-term stability in the Middle East. Regional observers fear that miscalculations or military incidents in the Gulf could trigger a wider confrontation involving multiple countries and armed groups. With global attention focused on developments in the Hormuz region, diplomatic channels remain under pressure to prevent further deterioration in relations between Tehran and Washington.
