During the hearing, Hegseth said the latest estimate reflected the financial impact of ongoing military operations linked to the conflict with Iran.
"The estimate we have as of today is $37.5 billion," he told lawmakers while discussing the department’s requirement for a supplemental funding package worth around $67 billion. The Defence Secretary’s remarks come as the Pentagon seeks additional resources to support military operations and maintain readiness. The supplemental funding request is intended to address costs associated with ongoing deployments, equipment, logistics and other defence requirements linked to current security challenges.
The latest estimate represents an increase of more than $8 billion from the previous figure of nearly $29 billion cited in mid-May. However, Hegseth did not provide a detailed breakdown of the expenses during the hearing, including how much was spent on specific military operations, weapons systems, personnel or other categories.
