Iran Cautions UN Security Council Against Provocative Measures On Hormuz Strait

Iran warns UN over Hormuz, vote on protection resolution postponed.

Iran has issued a stern warning to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) against taking any “provocative action” related to the Strait of Hormuz, as tensions escalate over a draft resolution on maritime security in the strategically vital waterway. The warning came ahead of a scheduled vote on a resolution initially proposed by Bahrain, which was later postponed without a new date.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi cautioned that “any provocative action by the aggressors and their supporters, including in the UN Security Council regarding the situation in the Strait of Hormuz, will only complicate the situation.” His remarks underline Tehran’s opposition to international military involvement in the strait, a critical corridor for global energy flows.

The draft resolution, backed by the United States and Gulf countries affected by a near-total shutdown of shipping in the region, called for authorising the use of “defensive” force to protect vessels from potential Iranian attacks. The disruption followed strikes by the US and Israel against Iran on February 28, which significantly heightened security risks in the strait.

However, the draft faced objections from key UNSC members, including Russia, China, and France, who raised concerns over the language and scope of the proposed mandate. Previous iterations of the resolution had also been contested, reflecting deep divisions within the 15-member council on how to respond to tensions in the Persian Gulf.

The postponement of the vote underscores the complexity of international consensus on the issue. While Gulf states and Washington seek to secure shipping lanes critical to global oil and gas supplies, major powers with strategic and economic ties to Tehran remain wary of authorising military measures that could escalate the conflict.

As the standoff continues, the Strait of Hormuz remains a flashpoint with potential implications for global energy markets. Analysts warn that prolonged uncertainty and unilateral actions could further destabilise regional security and intensify diplomatic friction among UNSC members.
