Iran-Aligned Houthis Announce Sea Navigation Ban Targeting Saudi Arabia

Iran-backed Houthi rebels have announced a maritime embargo on Saudi Arabia-linked shipping in the Red Sea and the strategic Bab al-Mandeb Strait, warning that Saudi commercial vessels and oil shipments could be targeted if tensions continue to escalate. The announcement marks a significant expansion of the group’s confrontation with Riyadh amid renewed instability in the region.
Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree said in a statement on Monday that the group was imposing the ban under what it described as an “eye for an eye” policy. The Houthis claimed the move was retaliation for Saudi actions against Yemen, including alleged strikes on Sana’a International Airport. The group said the restrictions would remain in place until Saudi Arabia stopped what it called hostile actions.
The Houthi leadership also called for increased mobilisation among its supporters, urging them to remain prepared for possible developments and warning that further Saudi military escalation would lead to a “comprehensive and harsh” response. The group did not provide specific details on how the maritime ban would be enforced.

The announcement follows a recent rise in tensions between the Houthis and the Saudi-led coalition, with attacks reported near Sana’a International Airport and Saudi Arabia’s Abha Airport. The developments have raised concerns over the stability of the Yemen truce, which has largely remained in place since 2022 despite ongoing political and military disputes.
The potential threat to Saudi-linked shipping could create challenges for Riyadh’s oil export operations, particularly as the kingdom has increased reliance on alternative routes such as the East-West Pipeline. The pipeline allows crude transportation to Red Sea ports, reducing dependence on routes affected by regional security concerns.
The Houthis have previously targeted more than 100 commercial vessels in the Red Sea during the Israel-Hamas war, disrupting international shipping routes. It remains uncertain whether the latest announcement will lead to sustained attacks on Saudi-linked vessels or serve primarily as a pressure tactic in the long-running Yemen conflict.
