Iowa Police Investigate Deaths Of Six Relatives Allegedly Killed By Family Member

Police investigate deadly family shooting across multiple locations.

Authorities in Muscatine, Iowa, are investigating a suspected murder-suicide after six people were found fatally shot and a 52-year-old man who investigators believe was the shooter died by suicide during a confrontation with police on Monday. Muscatine Police Chief Anthony Kies said officers discovered four victims at a residence after responding to a call, then later located the suspect, identified as Ryan Willis McFarland, on a city trail where he took his own life while speaking with officers.

Two additional victims, also believed to be relatives of McFarland, were discovered separately elsewhere in Muscatine, Kies said. One man was found dead inside his home and another inside a business; authorities have not released the names or ages of any of the victims pending family notification and further investigation. Local officials described the killings as a devastating event for the small community.

Police are continuing an active investigation, processing multiple crime scenes and conducting interviews as they work to establish the sequence of events and motive. Kies confirmed that McFarland had a prior criminal record but declined to provide details, saying investigators would share more information when appropriate. The department has asked anyone with information to contact its major crimes unit.

Kies, speaking at a news conference, expressed the difficulty of responding to an event of this scale in Muscatine. “Today I simply do not have the words,” he said, calling the incident “an act of evil and what it has done to our community.” Local leaders and law enforcement have not indicated any ongoing threat to the public.

Authorities have not disclosed a timeline for releasing the identities of the victims or for completing the forensic work, and have asked for patience as investigators follow standard procedures. The Muscatine Police Department and other local agencies are coordinating victim notification and community outreach in the aftermath.

Background: Muscatine, a city of roughly 23,000 residents about 50 miles southeast of Cedar Rapids, has not seen an incident on this scale in recent memory, officials said. Investigators will likely review McFarland’s criminal history and any connections between the victims and suspect as part of determining motive. Community members seeking to provide tips to police or to access support services were directed to the Muscatine Police Department.
