Instagram Confirms End-To-End Encrypted Chats Will Be Discontinued From May 2026

Instagram will discontinue encrypted chats on May 8, 2026; users should save messages before the feature ends.

Instagram will discontinue its end-to-end encrypted (E2EE) messaging feature on May 8, 2026, affecting the security of private chats on the platform. The announcement was confirmed by parent company Meta Platforms Inc., which said that encrypted direct messages will no longer be supported after the stated date.

End-to-end encryption ensures that only the sender and recipient can read messages, preventing even the platform provider from accessing the content. Instagram introduced this feature in December 2023 as part of Meta’s broader efforts to strengthen privacy across its apps. However, Meta cited low adoption rates among users as a key reason for its removal.

Once encryption is disabled, messages sent via Instagram will no longer benefit from end-to-end protection, meaning Meta may technically access message content for moderation or other purposes. Users with existing encrypted conversations will receive notifications within the app, advising them to download any messages or media they wish to retain before the feature is discontinued.

The decision has sparked debate among privacy experts. End-to-end encryption is widely regarded as one of the strongest measures to protect online communications from hacking or surveillance. Critics worry that removing this feature reduces user privacy and exposes private conversations to potential oversight.

At the same time, some governments and child-safety groups have long argued that encrypted messaging can make it harder to detect illegal activities or harmful content online. Meta continues to offer end-to-end encryption by default on WhatsApp, and experts suggest users seeking stronger privacy protections may be encouraged to shift communications to that platform.

The change highlights a shift in Meta’s messaging strategy and has reignited broader concerns about privacy, safety, and the handling of private conversations on major social media platforms. Users are advised to take necessary steps to secure important information before the May 8 deadline.
