Indonesian Government Seeks UN Security Council Meeting after Peacekeepers Killed in Lebanon
Indonesia demands UN Security Council emergency meeting after three peacekeepers killed in Lebanon conflict.
Indonesia has called on the United Nations (UN) to convene an emergency Security Council meeting following the deaths of three Indonesian peacekeepers in Lebanon. Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono conveyed the request to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Monday, stressing the need for a swift, transparent, and comprehensive investigation into the incident. “We request an emergency Security Council meeting and a prompt, thorough, and transparent investigation process,” Sugiono said in a statement on social media.
Sugiono also held a phone conversation with Lebanese Foreign Minister Youssef Rajji, expressing Indonesia’s deep concern over the attacks. Both sides agreed to maintain close coordination in responding to the situation while supporting efforts to de-escalate tensions and safeguard regional stability. Indonesia strongly condemned the attacks, underscoring that UN peacekeepers must be protected under international law.
The Indonesian soldiers were part of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). Two soldiers were killed when an explosion of unknown origin destroyed their vehicle in southern Lebanon, while two others were seriously injured and received treatment at a health facility in Beirut. Earlier, one soldier had already been reported killed in a separate strike near a UNIFIL position, bringing the total fatalities to three.
