India’s Growth Makes It Global Stability Anchor: NITI Aayog
Nation’s progress offers scalable model for Global South
India’s robust economic growth positions it as a global “anchor of stability,” NITI Aayog Vice Chairman Suman Bery declared at the UN’s High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on Monday. Speaking at UN Headquarters, Bery emphasized India’s role as a model for scalable development, offering new engines of growth amid global economic uncertainty.
Bery highlighted India’s inclusive progress, with 248 million people lifted out of poverty between 2013-14 and 2022-23. Enabled by digital technologies and principled reforms, India’s vibrant democracy is empowering its youth—the world’s largest cohort entering the workforce—ensuring a productive future. “India’s journey demonstrates that inclusive and sustainable development is both possible and scalable,” he said.
India is also catalyzing change in the Global South, sharing concessional finance, solar energy infrastructure, and digital governance tools. Bery reaffirmed India’s support for a reformed, representative UN system to reflect contemporary realities.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, addressing the forum, warned of global conflicts, rising inequalities, and strained aid budgets pushing SDGs out of reach. He urged urgent action, stating, “The SDGs are still achievable if we act with ambition.” India’s steady progress, Bery noted, offers a replicable pathway for developing nations navigating these challenges.
