Indians Among 13 Killed In Qatar Gas Plant Blast, 66 Others Injured

Gas plant explosion in Qatar kills 13, injures 66.

At least 13 people, including Indian and Pakistani nationals, were killed and 66 others injured in a major explosion at Qatar’s Ras Laffan liquefied natural gas (LNG) complex, according to statements made by the country’s energy authorities. The incident occurred during the restart of operations at the facility, one of the world’s largest LNG production hubs.

Qatar’s Energy Minister Saad al-Kaabi confirmed the fatalities during a media briefing, describing the incident as a tragic loss of life. He stated that those who died were foreign workers holding Indian and Pakistani nationalities, while expressing condolences to the affected families and communities.

According to officials, the explosion took place as workers were resuming activities that had been suspended earlier in the year. Operations at parts of the facility had reportedly been halted following regional security concerns linked to an Iranian attack in March. Authorities have not yet disclosed the precise cause of the blast, and investigations are expected to determine whether technical, operational, or other factors contributed to the incident.

The minister said that 66 people sustained injuries in the explosion and are currently receiving medical treatment. He noted that none of the injured were reported to be in life-threatening condition, providing some reassurance amid concerns over the scale of the accident. Emergency response teams were deployed immediately to contain the situation and assist affected workers.

The Ras Laffan industrial complex is a critical component of Qatar’s energy sector and plays a central role in the country’s position as one of the world’s leading exporters of liquefied natural gas. Any disruption at the facility is closely monitored by global energy markets due to its significance in international LNG supply chains.

Authorities have launched efforts to assess the extent of the damage and ensure the safety of personnel at the site. Further details regarding the victims, the cause of the explosion, and the timeline for restoring normal operations are expected to emerge as the investigation progresses. The incident has once again highlighted the importance of stringent safety measures at large-scale energy installations.
