Indian-Origin Nithya Raman Upsets LA Mayor Race with Last-Minute Entry, Eyes Historic Win

Indian-origin politician Nithya Raman has emerged as a significant contender in the 2026 Los Angeles mayoral race, shaking up the political landscape with a late but impactful entry. Currently serving as a councilmember representing District 4, Raman’s candidacy is drawing attention for both its timing and its potential to reshape the contest ahead of the upcoming primary.

Born in Kerala in 1981, Raman moved to the United States during her childhood and has since built a career at the intersection of policy, activism, and community engagement. In 2020, she made history by becoming the first Asian American woman and the first South Asian elected to the Los Angeles City Council, a milestone that underscored her growing influence in city politics.

Raman’s academic background has played a key role in shaping her policy approach. She studied at Harvard University and later earned a master’s degree in urban planning from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Before entering electoral politics, she co-founded the SELAH Neighbourhood Homeless Coalition, focusing extensively on homelessness — an issue that continues to anchor her campaign platform.

Her decision to enter the mayoral race came just hours before the filing deadline in February, surprising political observers, particularly as she had previously supported incumbent mayor Karen Bass. Despite this, Raman has positioned herself as a challenger to the existing system, arguing that Los Angeles requires structural reforms to address long-standing governance inefficiencies.

The campaign has largely centred on key urban challenges, including housing affordability, tenant protections, and civic infrastructure improvements. Raman has advocated for a housing-first approach to homelessness while also emphasising accountability and better financial management within City Hall. Her policy focus aligns with progressive priorities, placing her among a new wave of leaders pushing for systemic change.

Observers have increasingly drawn comparisons between Raman and Zohran Mamdani, citing similarities in their grassroots-driven campaigns and left-leaning policy agendas. While her rapid rise has faced criticism from rivals over issues such as homelessness and public safety, her campaign has gained momentum ahead of the June 2026 primary, positioning her as a serious contender in what could become a historic race.
