Indian Navy’s New Warship ‘Androth’ Joins Fleet Today
‘Androth’ boosts Navy’s anti-submarine power in coastal waters.
In a significant boost to India’s maritime strength, the Indian Navy will commission Androth, its second Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC), at the Naval Dockyard in Visakhapatnam on October 6, 2025. The ceremony, presided over by Vice Admiral Rajesh Pendharkar, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Eastern Naval Command, marks a pivotal moment in the Navy’s push for enhanced capability and self-reliance.
The Androth, constructed by Kolkata-based Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE), boasts over 80% indigenous content, showcasing India’s growing expertise in home-grown defense technologies. This state-of-the-art vessel is designed to strengthen the Navy’s ability to counter submarine threats in littoral waters, a critical domain in modern naval warfare. Equipped with advanced sonar systems, lightweight torpedoes, and anti-submarine rockets, Androth is tailored for operations in shallow coastal environments, ensuring robust defense against underwater threats.
“The commissioning of Androth is a testament to the Indian Navy’s commitment to indigenisation and operational excellence,” stated an official release from the Eastern Naval Command. “This milestone underscores our steady progress toward building a self-reliant, future-ready naval force.”

With its sleek design and cutting-edge systems, Androth enhances the Navy’s operational spectrum, particularly in coastal defense and anti-submarine warfare. Its induction strengthens India’s maritime security posture, enabling the Navy to safeguard vital sea lanes and counter emerging threats in the Indian Ocean Region. The ship’s versatility and advanced technology make it a vital asset for protecting India’s extensive coastline and maritime interests.
The commissioning ceremony will include a ceremonial guard of honor and a display of the Navy’s operational prowess, highlighting the strategic importance of Androth in bolstering India’s naval dominance. As the Navy continues to modernize and expand its fleet, Androth stands as a symbol of India’s ambition to become a global maritime power, driven by self-reliance and innovation.
