Indian Envoy Meets Bangladesh Commerce Minister, Discusses Trade And Economic Cooperation

Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi met Bangladesh Commerce Minister Khandakar Abdul Muktadir in Dhaka to discuss bilateral economic and commercial cooperation and explore measures to strengthen trade and investment ties between the two countries. The meeting focused on ways to make economic engagement more effective while identifying areas that could create new opportunities for businesses on both sides.

The Indian High Commission in Dhaka said the discussions underlined the important role of businesses and the private sector in driving the economic partnership. The two sides also discussed issues of mutual interest and stressed the importance of strengthening people-to-people connections, particularly among business communities, professionals and citizens of both countries.

The talks also covered measures to facilitate cross-border trade and expand bilateral commerce. According to local media reports, discussions included reopening border haats, ensuring the full functioning of land ports and easing restrictions on yarn imports through land routes. These measures were discussed in the context of addressing existing obstacles affecting trade between India and Bangladesh.

Muktadir said bilateral trade between India and Bangladesh is currently around $13 billion, but several difficulties have affected commercial exchanges over the past one-and-a-half years. He also noted that India remains Bangladesh’s second-largest trading partner after China. A proposal has been made to establish a joint task force involving businesses from both countries to strengthen commercial cooperation and address trade-related challenges.

Digital infrastructure was also identified as an important area for improving economic engagement, with the potential to create new investment opportunities and support the expansion of bilateral commerce. Muktadir expressed hope that the Indian High Commissioner’s initiative would provide fresh momentum to economic relations and strengthen cooperation between the two countries.

Trivedi underlined the importance of working together despite political and economic differences, noting that people in both countries share aspirations for development and progress. He stressed that India and Bangladesh are sovereign and independent nations and that bilateral cooperation should be based on equality. He also noted that stronger economic ties could provide a foundation for expanding cooperation in other areas and create greater opportunities for the younger generation.
