Indian Army Major Prabhat Mishra wins two top awards in US military course.
An Indian Army officer has brought laurels to the country after securing top academic honours at the US Army Command and General Staff College in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Major Prabhat Mishra was among nearly 1,000 military officers who graduated from the advanced leadership programme designed to prepare mid-career officers for senior command and staff responsibilities.
Major Mishra received two prestigious awards during the graduation ceremony, including the Birrer-Brookes Award for Outstanding Master of Military Arts and Science Thesis and the General Douglas MacArthur Military Leadership Writing Award. The recognition places him among the standout performers of the 10-month programme, which is regarded as one of the US Army’s most respected professional military education courses.
This year’s graduating class included 951 officers, of whom 120 were international military students representing allied and partner nations. The programme is structured to enhance strategic thinking, leadership capabilities, and operational planning skills among field-grade officers, who are expected to take on higher responsibilities within their respective armed forces.

Addressing the graduating officers, Lieutenant General Jim Isenhower, Commanding General of the US Army Combined Arms Command and Fort Leavenworth, highlighted the critical role of mid-level officers in military leadership. He noted that officers at this stage of service are expected to influence both frontline troops and senior command structures, making them central to the functioning of the armed forces.
The course was conducted in a dynamic and evolving operational environment, with participants also adapting to changes in academic schedules and training formats over the duration of the programme. Officials emphasised that the training is designed not only to strengthen tactical and operational skills but also to prepare officers for leadership in complex modern warfare scenarios.
Alongside Major Mishra, several other international officers were recognised for excellence. Officers from Norway and Kuwait received additional honours, reflecting the global nature of the institution and its role in fostering military cooperation among partner countries. The US Army Command and General Staff College continues to serve as a key platform for professional military education for officers from around the world.
India’s participation in such programmes reflects the growing defence cooperation between India and the United States over the past two decades. Expanding joint exercises, officer exchanges, and training initiatives have strengthened military-to-military ties, with increasing numbers of Indian officers attending advanced courses aimed at improving interoperability and strategic alignment between the two countries.
