India Strengthens Myanmar’s Reconstruction With Earthquake Assessment Tools
India supplies technical equipment to Myanmar for post-earthquake reconstruction.
India on Monday handed over specialized equipment for post-earthquake building inspections to the Federation of Myanmar Engineering Societies (Fed.MES) in Yangon, reinforcing New Delhi’s technical support for Myanmar’s reconstruction efforts. The initiative, carried out under an Indian government grant, aims to enhance the technical capacity of authorities and organizations involved in earthquake recovery.
The handover ceremony saw Indian Ambassador to Myanmar Abhay Thakur present the equipment to Fed.MES President U Khin Maung Htaey. Senior officials from Myanmar, including Engineering Council President Aung Kyaw Myat, Earthquake Committee President U Nyunt Maung San, and Yangon Technological University Rector Hla Myo Tun, attended alongside representatives from UN-Habitat and other civil society organizations. A demonstration of the equipment and its functions followed the ceremony.
According to the Indian Embassy, the advanced technical tools include subsurface investigation instruments, leveling and digital assessment devices, structural alignment equipment, and systems for rebound monitoring, concrete strength evaluation, reinforcement positioning, and deformation tracking. These tools are intended to support detailed structural assessments, retrofitting, and rehabilitation of earthquake-affected buildings.

The Embassy highlighted that the equipment will enable detailed damage mapping, evaluation of building integrity, and informed decision-making for repair and reconstruction. The initiative forms part of broader efforts to support long-term rehabilitation and resilience-building in Myanmar.
This event follows India’s recent inauguration of the Sarsobeikman Literary Centre in Yangon on March 4, a $3.77 million India-assisted project aimed at preserving and promoting Myanmar’s literary heritage. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar addressed the occasion virtually, while Myanmar Prime Minister U Nyo Saw attended as chief guest.
Together, these efforts reflect India’s sustained commitment to socio-economic development in Myanmar, combining disaster preparedness, technical collaboration, and cultural support under its wider development partnership framework.
