India Strengthens CARICOM Relations Through Diplomatic Visits And Cooperation Framework

India expands cooperation with CARICOM nations through diplomacy and development initiatives.

India is continuing to deepen its diplomatic and development engagement with Caribbean nations through sustained high-level interactions and expanded cooperation frameworks with the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), according to a recent analysis highlighting growing bilateral momentum. The relationship, rooted in historical ties dating back to the colonial era and indentured migration, has evolved into a structured partnership focused on development, trade, and global cooperation.

The renewed focus gained significant traction during the visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Trinidad and Tobago last year, which also marked 180 years since the arrival of Indian indentured labourers in the region. The visit was seen as a milestone in modern India–CARICOM relations, reinforcing cultural linkages while expanding political and economic engagement between India and Caribbean nations.

Further strengthening this trajectory, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar recently undertook visits to Jamaica, Suriname, and Trinidad and Tobago, holding discussions with regional leaders aimed at enhancing bilateral cooperation. These engagements were viewed as part of India’s broader diplomatic outreach strategy to deepen partnerships with developing regions across the Global South.

According to a report cited from a Caribbean media outlet, the second CARICOM–India Summit marked a key moment in institutionalising cooperation, with participation from leaders across member states and joint chairing by India and Grenada. The summit produced a structured framework aimed at expanding collaboration across multiple sectors, including technology, agriculture, healthcare, and climate resilience.

Among the key proposals highlighted were capacity-building initiatives such as IT scholarships, training programmes for civil servants, and the expansion of technological support centres. India also proposed cooperation in agriculture through sharing of advanced farming techniques and promoting millet cultivation, alongside initiatives in renewable energy, including collaboration under the International Solar Alliance and Global Biofuel Alliance.

The partnership framework further emphasised digital innovation, with India offering cooperation in digital public infrastructure such as UPI, e-marketplace systems, and SME support tools. Additional focus areas include maritime security, ocean economy development, and affordable healthcare solutions through Indian pharmaceutical and telemedicine initiatives. The growing engagement underscores India’s expanding global outreach and CARICOM’s increasing role as a strategic partner in an evolving multipolar world.
