India Shifts Students to Safer Qom After Tehran Strikes

The Indian Embassy relocates students to Qom after escalating strikes in Tehran.

Over 200 Indian students studying in Tehran have been shifted to the city of Qom following joint military strikes by the United States and Israel on Iran, amid escalating security concerns. The students were transported early Tuesday morning in buses arranged by the Indian embassy as part of precautionary measures to ensure their safety during the ongoing hostilities.

The relocated students, many of whom are from Jammu and Kashmir, were enrolled at institutions including Tehran University of Medical Sciences, Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences and Iran University of Medical Sciences. A smaller number of engineering students were also among those moved. Qom, situated about 140 kilometres south of Tehran, has been identified as a comparatively safer location away from the capital, which has witnessed strikes and explosions in recent days.

Dr Mohammad Momin Khan, national representative of the All India Medical Students Association, said the Indian Embassy in Tehran coordinated the evacuation, arranging five buses to transport the students safely. He added that further plans are being considered to relocate other Indian nationals residing in different parts of Iran, depending on the evolving situation. Students who arrived in Qom confirmed they did so without incident.

One of the evacuated students, Syed Fazil, described the tense atmosphere in Tehran, saying they had been hearing repeated sounds of blasts before being moved. The relocation underscores the Indian government’s efforts to prioritise the safety of its nationals amid the deepening conflict. Authorities continue to monitor developments closely, with additional measures likely if the security situation further deteriorates.
