India Sends 10 Tonnes Of Antiretroviral Medicines To Botswana For HIV-AIDS Care
India extends medical assistance to Botswana for HIV-AIDS treatment.
India on Tuesday dispatched 10 tonnes of antiretroviral medicines to Botswana to support the country’s public health system in HIV/AIDS treatment, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said. The move underscores New Delhi’s focus on strengthening health cooperation with countries of the Global South and supporting access to essential medicines.
Jaishankar announced the dispatch in a post on X, saying the medicines were being provided to support Botswana’s public health system for HIV/AIDS treatment. He described the assistance as an affirmation of India’s commitment to expanding health cooperation with its Global South partners.
The medical assistance comes against the backdrop of close and friendly bilateral relations between India and Botswana. According to the High Commission of India in Gaborone, the relationship has gained fresh momentum in recent years, with both countries working to deepen mutual trust and cooperation across several areas.

India-Botswana ties also received a significant boost during President Droupadi Murmu’s State Visit to Botswana in November. It was the first-ever presidential visit from India to Botswana. During the visit, Botswana also made a symbolic donation of eight cheetahs to India under Project Cheetah, marking a new chapter in cooperation between the two countries in wildlife conservation.
President Murmu and Botswana President Duma Gideon Boko witnessed the release of the cheetahs, originating from the Ghanzi region, into a quarantine facility at the Mokolodi Nature Reserve by experts from India and Botswana. Boko described India as the “Mother of Democracy” and said the country had been a steadfast source of inspiration and support in Botswana’s development journey.
During their discussions, the two leaders agreed to expand bilateral cooperation in several sectors, including trade and investment, agriculture, renewable energy, health, education, skill development, defence and digital technology. The dispatch of antiretroviral medicines adds a concrete health cooperation component to these broader efforts and reflects India’s continued engagement with Botswana and other Global South partners.
