India Rushes Aid To Quake-Stricken Myanmar: 15 Tonnes Of Relief Lands In Yangon

India’s first tranche of 15 tonnes of humanitarian aid touched down in Yangon on Saturday morning, offering a lifeline to Myanmar following Friday’s devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake.

The relief, airlifted via an Indian Air Force C-130J aircraft from Hindon Air Force Station under ‘Operation Brahma,’ includes essentials like tents, blankets, sleeping bags, ready-to-eat meals, water purifiers, hygiene kits, solar lamps, generator sets, and medicines such as paracetamol and antibiotics.

The earthquake, centered 16 kilometers northwest of Sagaing near Mandalay, has claimed over 1,000 lives and injured more than 2,376, according to Myanmar’s military government, with the toll expected to rise as rescue efforts continue amid a civil war-ravaged landscape.

The Indian Embassy in Myanmar is coordinating with local authorities to ensure swift delivery, while External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal emphasized India’s role as a “first responder.” Prime Minister Narendra Modi had pledged full support on Friday, reflecting India’s Act East policy in action.

This initial shipment, flagged off at 4 AM IST, also carries a search-and-rescue team and medical personnel to assist in the crisis, which has flattened buildings, bridges, and roads across central Myanmar.

With more aid promised, India joins a growing international response—China, Russia, and Malaysia are also mobilizing—underscoring solidarity with a nation grappling with both natural disaster and ongoing conflict.
