India Receives First Iranian Crude Shipment Since 2019 Under US Waiver

India resumes Iranian oil imports after seven-year gap

India has received shipments of Iranian crude oil for the first time in nearly seven years, marking a significant shift in its energy import strategy amid evolving geopolitical dynamics and supply disruptions in global oil markets.

According to ship-tracking data and multiple reports, two very large crude carriers (VLCCs) carrying Iranian oil have reached Indian ports, signaling the resumption of imports from Tehran after a halt that began in 2019. The shipments were enabled by a temporary waiver granted by the United States, allowing select countries to purchase Iranian crude despite existing sanctions.

The vessels — including the Iran-flagged Felicity and the Curacao-flagged Jaya — docked at ports on India’s western and eastern coasts, respectively. Each VLCC can carry up to two million barrels of crude oil, underscoring the scale of the shipments. Indian refiners such as Indian Oil Corporation and Reliance Industries are among those that have taken advantage of the waiver to procure Iranian supplies.

India, the world’s third-largest oil importer and consumer, had stopped buying Iranian crude in May 2019 following U.S. pressure and sanctions targeting Tehran’s energy exports. The recent move reflects both short-term supply needs and strategic flexibility as global oil flows face disruption, particularly due to tensions in West Asia and instability around the Strait of Hormuz — a critical route for global energy shipments.

Officials indicated that the temporary easing of sanctions is aimed at stabilizing global oil prices and ensuring supply continuity. However, the waiver is set to expire soon, creating uncertainty about whether such imports can continue in the coming weeks.

The development highlights India’s pragmatic approach to energy security, as it seeks to diversify crude sources and shield its economy from volatility in international markets. Analysts suggest that while the current imports may be limited in duration, they signal a potential recalibration of trade dynamics if geopolitical conditions continue to evolve.
