India Positioned As Bridge-Builder And Balancer In Contemporary Global Affairs: Report

Report highlights India’s growing role in shaping global balance.

India is being increasingly described as a “bridge-builder” and “balancer” in the evolving global order, with a recent report highlighting its growing role in shaping international diplomacy and promoting a more equitable system of global governance. The assessment points to India’s strategic positioning between major power blocs and its continued emphasis on autonomy in foreign policy.

According to an opinion piece published in the South Africa-based Sunday Independent, authored by Phapano Phasha of the Centre for Alternative Political and Economic Thought, India’s approach allows it to engage with multiple global platforms without entering formal alliances. This flexibility, the report notes, enables India to safeguard its national interests while maintaining constructive relations with both developed and developing nations.

The analysis highlights India’s participation in the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (Quad), comprising the United States, Japan, Australia and India, as an example of its balancing strategy. While the grouping is seen as a key stabilising mechanism in the Indo-Pacific region, India has consistently resisted transforming it into a formal military alliance, preserving its strategic independence.

The report further states that India’s foreign policy is rooted in its Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) legacy, which prioritises strategic autonomy and engagement across diverse geopolitical platforms. This positioning, it argues, allows India to act as a voice for the Global South while simultaneously strengthening partnerships with Western economies, including the United States, European Union, United Kingdom and Nordic countries.

It also underscores India’s expanding leadership role among developing nations through South-South cooperation and participation in multilateral forums such as BRICS. The report notes that India’s economic scale and diplomatic outreach place it in a unique position to influence reforms in global governance structures during a period of institutional uncertainty and geopolitical fragmentation.

With India set to chair BRICS in 2026 under the theme “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability,” the report suggests that New Delhi is increasingly viewed as a key player capable of bridging divides between the Global North and South while contributing to a more balanced and multipolar world order.
