India Open To Rebuilding Bangladesh Ties Despite Continuing Dispute Over Sheikh Hasina

India is keeping the door open for normalisation of ties with Bangladesh despite recent strains in the bilateral relationship, including differences surrounding the proposed visit of Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to India and the continuing issue of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. While the political relationship has faced several hiccups, New Delhi has continued diplomatic engagement with the current administration in Dhaka. The Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh has been meeting senior officials in the present administration, indicating that established diplomatic channels remain active despite differences between the two sides. India has also continued to emphasise the importance of maintaining broader relations between the people of the two neighbouring countries, suggesting that political disagreements should not completely overshadow the wider relationship.

The issue of Sheikh Hasina remains one of the most sensitive aspects of India-Bangladesh ties. The Bangladesh government has maintained that the former prime minister's presence in India is a key concern in its relationship with New Delhi. Hasina left Bangladesh amid the political upheaval that led to a change in government and has since remained in India. While Dhaka continues to attach importance to the issue, India has sought to keep its engagement with the current Bangladeshi administration going. The two countries have a long-standing relationship encompassing trade, connectivity, border management, security, culture and extensive people-to-people contacts. India's continued diplomatic engagement indicates that it is seeking to preserve these wider interests even as the Hasina issue remains politically significant for Dhaka.

The proposed visit of Tarique Rahman to India has also emerged as an important part of the current diplomatic discussions. Rahman had planned to visit India, but the proposed trip has been put on hold, even as discussions on making the visit possible continue. India has extended invitations to the Bangladesh prime minister on more than one occasion. Prime Minister Narendra Modi invited Rahman to India for a bilateral visit, while another invitation was extended for him to attend the recently concluded BRICS Summit in New Delhi in his capacity as chair of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation, or BIMSTEC. The invitations reflected India's willingness to maintain high-level engagement with Bangladesh despite the political complications affecting the relationship.

Rahman did not attend the BRICS Summit in New Delhi. His absence came at a time when India and Bangladesh were continuing discussions over the proposed bilateral visit and the broader direction of their relationship. The fact that discussions around the visit have continued, however, indicates that diplomatic engagement has not been completely disrupted. For India, maintaining communication with the Bangladeshi leadership remains important given the close geographical, economic and social links between the two countries. At the same time, Bangladesh's continued emphasis on the Sheikh Hasina issue means that political differences are likely to remain an important component of bilateral discussions as both sides assess the next phase of their relationship.

Indian officials have also sought to underline the importance of people-to-people relations rather than allowing political disagreements to define the entire relationship. Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi has spoken about prioritising the issues and aspirations of people in both countries, while indicating that political matters would continue to take their own course. Such an approach places emphasis on preserving the wider relationship even when governments face disagreements. India and Bangladesh share extensive cultural and historical links, while people on both sides have longstanding connections that extend beyond formal diplomatic relations. Maintaining these links remains an important consideration as the two governments navigate current political differences.

India's continued engagement with Bangladesh therefore points to an effort to keep the possibility of normalisation open rather than allowing individual disputes to permanently shape the bilateral relationship. The Sheikh Hasina issue remains a major concern for Dhaka, while the proposed visit of Rahman remains under discussion. Despite these unresolved matters, New Delhi has continued to engage with Bangladesh's current administration and has extended invitations for high-level interaction. India's emphasis on people-to-people ties also indicates a broader effort to protect the foundations of the relationship from political turbulence. The coming period will depend on how the two sides address their outstanding differences while maintaining diplomatic communication and cooperation on issues of mutual interest.
