India Greece Sign Defence Pact for Stronger Ties

India and Greece sign Joint Declaration of Intent to boost defence industrial cooperation and exchange 2026 military plan.

India and Greece on Monday significantly strengthened their defence relationship as Defence Minister Rajnath Singh held bilateral talks with Greece’s Minister of National Defence, Nikolaos-Georgios Dendias, in New Delhi. The discussions reaffirmed the growing strategic partnership between the two nations, rooted in shared values of peace, stability, freedom, and mutual respect. Both sides highlighted the steady expansion of defence and security cooperation in recent years.

A key outcome of the meeting was the signing of a Joint Declaration of Intent aimed at enhancing defence industrial cooperation. The declaration lays the foundation for a five-year roadmap that aligns India’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative with Greece’s Agenda 2030 defence reforms. The focus will be on strengthening indigenous defence manufacturing, technology collaboration, and industrial capacity building in both countries.

In addition, the two ministers exchanged a Bilateral Military Cooperation Plan for 2026, outlining future engagements between the armed forces of India and Greece. The plan details proposed joint exercises, training programmes, and institutional exchanges designed to improve interoperability and deepen military-to-military ties.

Regional and global security issues also featured prominently during the talks. Both leaders acknowledged their shared outlook on maritime security and underlined the convergence of views between the two ancient seafaring nations. Emphasis was placed on cooperation in the Indian Ocean and the Mediterranean regions, reflecting the growing strategic relevance of maritime stability.

As a significant step toward enhanced maritime collaboration, Greece announced the posting of a Greek International Liaison Officer at the Information Fusion Centre – Indian Ocean Region (IFC-IOR) in Gurugram. This move is expected to strengthen information sharing, maritime domain awareness, and coordination on security challenges across the region.

Earlier in the day, the Greek Defence Minister paid homage to India’s fallen soldiers at the National War Memorial and was accorded a Tri-Service Guard of Honour at the Manekshaw Centre. The Hellenic delegation also visited Bengaluru to engage with defence public sector units, private industry stakeholders, and start-ups, underscoring the growing momentum of the India–Greece strategic partnership.
