India Expresses Condolences On Death Of Former Yemen President Hadi

India expresses condolences on former Yemen President’s death.

The Government of India on Wednesday expressed condolences over the death of former Yemen President Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi, describing him as a “friend of India” who contributed significantly to strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries. The tribute comes amid diplomatic acknowledgements from multiple nations following his demise in Riyadh at the age of 80.

Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi passed away on May 28 in Riyadh, according to Yemeni state-run media operating from Saudi Arabia. Hadi served as Yemen’s President from 2012 to 2022, a period marked by political transition and the escalation of the country’s long-running civil conflict.

As part of India’s official response, Sripriya Ranganathan, Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs overseeing Consular, Passport and Visa (CPV) and Overseas Indian Affairs (OIA) divisions, visited the Embassy of Yemen in New Delhi to sign the condolence book. The Ministry of External Affairs said India extended its sincere sympathies to Hadi’s family as well as to the government and people of Yemen.

Hadi’s presidency began in 2012 following a Gulf-backed political transition after the resignation of longtime Yemeni leader Ali Abdullah Saleh. During his tenure, he oversaw efforts to restructure Yemen’s military and security institutions. However, his administration soon faced severe challenges as Houthi forces expanded their control over key regions, including the capital Sanaa.

In 2015, Hadi resigned after being placed under house arrest by Houthi fighters but later fled to Aden and withdrew his resignation, calling for international intervention. This led to the Saudi-led coalition’s military intervention in Yemen, further intensifying the conflict and contributing to one of the world’s most complex humanitarian crises.

In 2022, Hadi formally transferred his powers to an eight-member Presidential Leadership Council aimed at unifying anti-Houthi factions and advancing peace efforts. India’s tribute highlighted his role in maintaining and strengthening India-Yemen relations during a turbulent period in the region’s history, underscoring his continued diplomatic significance even after leaving office.
