India Evacuates 312 Fishermen From Iran Via Armenia, Jaishankar Thanks Armenia

India evacuates 312 fishermen from Iran via Armenia in coordinated diplomatic rescue operation.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Saturday announced that 312 Indian fishermen stranded in Iran have been safely evacuated and brought back to India through Armenia, marking another phase of India’s ongoing efforts to repatriate its citizens from conflict-affected regions in West Asia.

In a post on social media platform X, Jaishankar confirmed the evacuation and expressed gratitude to the Government of Armenia and Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan for facilitating the safe transit of the Indian nationals. He noted that Armenia played a key role in enabling the movement of stranded fishermen from Iran back to India.

According to official sources, the evacuation was carried out as part of coordinated diplomatic efforts led by the Ministry of External Affairs (India) to ensure the safety of Indian nationals affected by instability in the region. The fishermen were transported through Armenia before being flown back to India, continuing a structured repatriation process that has been underway for several weeks.

Earlier, on April 5, another batch of 345 Indian fishermen stranded in Iran had been safely returned to Chennai through the same evacuation route. With the latest movement, authorities say the total number of Indians brought back from Iran has now crossed 1,200, highlighting the scale of the ongoing evacuation mission.

Officials said that nearly 996 of those evacuated were first moved to Armenia before being transported onward to India. The government has been working closely with regional partners to ensure safe passage amid continuing tensions in West Asia, where security conditions remain unstable.

Meanwhile, broader geopolitical developments continue to unfold in the region, with diplomatic engagements taking place between international stakeholders aimed at reducing tensions in the Gulf. While these negotiations remain separate from India’s evacuation efforts, officials say they underline the wider instability that has made coordinated humanitarian and diplomatic responses necessary.
