India Condemns Oman Vessel Attack After 11 Indians Suffer Injuries

11 Indian nationals were injured after a commercial vessel came under attack off Oman.

India on Tuesday condemned the attack on Panama-flagged commercial vessel MT On Peace off the coast of Oman and called for an immediate end to attacks on commercial shipping in the region. The vessel was struck by a projectile while transiting the Strait of Hormuz, leaving 12 crew members injured, including 11 Indian nationals.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the vessel had 19 crew members, of whom 17 were Indian nationals. Following the incident, the injured crew members were evacuated with assistance from Omani authorities and taken to Khasab in Oman for medical treatment. The MEA expressed its appreciation to the Omani authorities for their assistance in ensuring the injured crew received care.

The ministry said the continuing attacks on shipping in the region remain a matter of serious concern for India. It reiterated that commercial vessels, seafarers and civilian infrastructure must not be targeted and urged an immediate cessation of such incidents. India also stressed the need for navigation and commercial activity through international waterways to be restored at the earliest.

The latest incident comes days after five Indian nationals aboard the Kuwait-flagged tanker MT Kazimah III were rescued after the vessel was struck by a projectile while transiting the Strait of Hormuz. The Indian Embassy in Oman coordinated the rescue operation, and all five Indian crew members were safely brought ashore with assistance from Omani authorities.

The incidents have renewed concerns over the safety of commercial shipping and seafarers travelling through the strategically important waterway. The Strait of Hormuz connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea and serves as a major international route for energy shipments, including crude oil and liquefied natural gas from Gulf producers.

India has repeatedly emphasised the safety and welfare of its nationals working aboard commercial vessels and the importance of keeping international maritime routes open. With a significant number of Indian seafarers serving on merchant ships worldwide, the government has continued to monitor developments and coordinate with authorities in the region when Indian nationals are affected.
