India Canada Agree to Deploy Security Liaison Officers in Each Other's Countries

India and Canada agree to post security liaison officers to boost bilateral security cooperation.

India and Canada have agreed to post security liaison officers in each other’s countries, a move aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation in security and law enforcement. The decision came after a high-level meeting between National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Nathalie Drouin, Deputy Clerk and National Security and Intelligence Advisor to the Canadian Prime Minister.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, both sides acknowledged progress on several initiatives to enhance the safety and security of their citizens. They also agreed on a shared work plan to guide future collaboration on national security priorities. The liaison officers will act as key points of contact for practical and timely coordination between the two countries.

The appointment of security and law enforcement liaison officers is expected to improve information sharing on issues of mutual concern, including the illegal flow of drugs such as fentanyl precursors and transnational organized criminal networks. The officers will also facilitate closer operational cooperation between respective agencies.

Both nations have committed to formalising their collaboration on cybersecurity policies and information sharing. Discussions will continue on other areas of mutual interest, such as fraud prevention and immigration enforcement, all in line with domestic laws and international obligations.

Experts say this step marks a significant strengthening of India-Canada relations, as it creates a structured channel for addressing emerging security threats. Officials highlighted that such bilateral mechanisms are crucial in responding effectively to global challenges in law enforcement and national security.

The initiative is part of a broader effort by both countries to deepen cooperation across multiple domains, ensuring that citizens remain safe while fostering trust and collaboration at institutional levels. This move also signals India and Canada’s intent to take a proactive approach to shared security concerns.
