India, Bangladesh Step Up Coordination Against Border Crime And Illegal Crossings

Both nations strengthen border security coordination.

India and Bangladesh have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening border security and enhancing bilateral cooperation following the conclusion of the 57th Director General-level border coordination conference in New Delhi. The four-day meeting, held from June 8 to June 11 at the Border Security Force (BSF) headquarters, brought together senior officials from both countries to discuss a range of border management and security issues. The talks were led by BSF Director General Praveen Kumar and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Director General Major General Mohammad Ashrafuzzaman Siddiqui.

According to an official statement issued by the BSF on Friday, both sides engaged in detailed discussions on preventing cross-border crimes and improving coordination along the shared international boundary. Key issues included the smuggling of narcotics, arms, counterfeit currency, gold and other contraband, as well as illegal border crossings, human trafficking and activities of transnational criminal networks. The two delegations also reviewed existing mechanisms aimed at maintaining security and stability in border regions.

A significant portion of the discussions focused on sensitive matters such as border deaths and cases involving illegal, inadvertent and forcible crossings. The delegations examined measures to address these challenges while ensuring effective border management. They also discussed the construction of border infrastructure, implementation of the Coordinated Border Management Plan and the need for confidence-building measures to strengthen cooperation between the two border guarding forces.

The conference carried added significance as it was the first DG-level meeting since the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)-led government assumed office in Dhaka earlier this year. It also came amid evolving political developments in India’s eastern region. The India-Bangladesh border stretches approximately 4,096 kilometres, making it one of the longest international borders in the world, with more than half of it running through West Bengal. The extensive border presents complex security and administrative challenges for both nations.

Both countries reiterated their commitment to maintaining peace, tranquillity and stability along the border. The BSF stated that the two sides agreed to strengthen coordinated patrols, enhance surveillance mechanisms, improve real-time intelligence sharing and intensify joint efforts against cross-border criminal activities. They also stressed the importance of creating awareness among border residents about the sanctity of the international boundary and the legal consequences of engaging in unlawful activities.

The meeting concluded in what officials described as a cordial, positive and forward-looking atmosphere, reflecting the longstanding cooperation between the BSF and BGB. Both delegations expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the discussions and reaffirmed their resolve to deepen professional engagement and mutual trust. The next round of DG-level talks is expected to take place in Dhaka in November, where both sides will continue discussions aimed at ensuring secure, peaceful and well-managed borders.
