India Backs UN Call to Protect GCC, Jordan from Iran's Threatening Strikes

India cosponsors UN condemnation of Iran's attacks on Gulf, Jordan.

India has co-sponsored a landmark United Nations Security Council resolution condemning Iran's "egregious attacks" on Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) nations and Jordan, amid the ongoing U.S.-Iran war that has spilled over into regional strikes. The resolution, led by Bahrain on behalf of the GCC and adopted on March 11, 2026, passed with 13 votes in favor and abstentions from China and Russia, marking a significant diplomatic development with a record 135 co-sponsors among UN member states.

The text, drafted by the Gulf states, strongly condemns in the "strongest terms" Iran's missile and drone attacks targeting Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Jordan since the conflict escalated in late February. It determines that these acts breach international law, constitute a serious threat to international peace and security, and involve deliberate targeting of civilians, critical infrastructure, and commercial vessels. The resolution demands the immediate and unconditional cessation of all such attacks by Iran, along with an end to provocations, threats against neighboring countries, and any interference with navigation through key waterways like the Strait of Hormuz.

India joined over 130 other nations—including major powers such as the United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Japan, Australia, and regional players like Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the UAE—in co-sponsoring the measure. This broad support underscores widespread international concern over the escalation, particularly as Iranian retaliatory strikes have disrupted regional stability, energy flows, and shipping routes. The resolution reaffirms commitment to the sovereignty, territorial integrity, and political independence of the affected states, while calling for de-escalation to prevent further regional conflagration.

Tehran has sharply criticized the resolution as a "blatant misuse" of the Security Council, arguing it ignores U.S. and Israeli military actions against Iran and reflects selective condemnation. Iranian officials have maintained that their responses are defensive in nature amid the broader conflict initiated by Operation Epic Fury. The adoption occurs against the backdrop of heightened tensions, including continued exchanges of fire, oil market volatility, and civilian impacts across West Asia.

The resolution's passage with near-universal co-sponsorship highlights the diplomatic isolation faced by Iran on this issue, even as Russia and China chose abstention over veto. It sends a unified message from the international community urging restraint, though enforcement remains limited without binding follow-up measures. As the war enters its third week, the UN action adds pressure for diplomatic channels to address the root causes and prevent wider fallout, with implications for global energy security and bilateral ties in the region.
