India-Australia Partnership Expands Through Education And Research Cooperation

Education strengthens India-Australia ties through collaboration.

Education is emerging as one of the strongest pillars of the India-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, with both countries significantly expanding cooperation in higher education, research, student mobility, and institutional collaboration. The growing presence of Australian universities in India, alongside increasing academic exchanges and joint research initiatives, reflects a broader commitment to strengthening people-to-people ties and building a skilled workforce capable of addressing shared global challenges. The partnership is increasingly being viewed as a long-term strategic investment rather than being limited to student exchanges.

Speaking during a joint press conference with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the importance of the Indian diaspora in strengthening bilateral relations and acknowledged Australia's continued popularity as a preferred destination for Indian students. He said the establishment of Australian university campuses in India has opened a new chapter in knowledge cooperation between the two nations. Modi reaffirmed that both governments will continue to promote greater exchanges of students, professionals, researchers, and tourists to deepen engagement across multiple sectors.

Australian Education Minister Jason Clare described education as a critical pillar of the bilateral relationship, noting that more than 100,000 Indian students are currently pursuing higher education in Australia. He highlighted the rapid expansion of Australian universities in India, with Deakin University and the University of Wollongong already operating campuses in GIFT City, while the University of New South Wales is preparing to open its Bengaluru campus. Clare also announced that Flinders University and Victoria University have received approval to establish campuses in India, while Western Sydney University and the University of Western Australia are expanding through academic collaborations and transnational education initiatives, including dual-degree programmes.

Education experts said the partnership has evolved far beyond traditional student mobility and is now playing a strategic role in innovation, workforce development, research collaboration, and economic growth. Professor Attila Brungs AO, Vice-Chancellor and President of UNSW Sydney, said universities are helping strengthen bilateral ties through collaborative research, academic partnerships, and student exchanges while preparing graduates with global perspectives. Trade and Investment Commissioner for South Asia at Austrade, Vik Singh, added that Indian students continue to serve as a vital bridge between the two countries, while the expansion of Australian campuses in India will create new opportunities for skills development, academic mobility, and joint research.

Experts also believe the India-Australia education partnership is entering a transformative phase as universities establish a stronger presence within India's higher education ecosystem. Sagar Bahadur of Acumen said collaboration is expanding into sectors such as healthcare, advanced manufacturing, critical technologies, and sports, making education a strategic driver of innovation and economic resilience. Professor Nimay Kalyani of the University of Wollongong India noted that the growth of international branch campuses and the mutual recognition of qualifications are strengthening confidence in cross-border education, while Swinburne University of Technology's Oliver Fortescue emphasized that deeper cooperation between governments, universities, and industry will help develop globally competitive graduates and deliver long-term benefits for both India and Australia.
